Find A Murder On Google Maps

One of the most interesting uses of Google Maps to date comes out of the New York Times who have secured the records for every murder in the city – and plotted them on Google Maps.

It covers a period of 2003-2005 which includes over 1600 murders in the US.

John’s suggestion – Google Maps for traffic deaths in Ireland ©. That’ll show people….

Google Maps for traffic deaths in Ireland – do you want help building that?

I don’t think it should be hard to build actually, I just need to find out how out I can get a list of road fatalities. Maybe from the Gardai or the CSO perhaps..

Looks like its a go for that project…. this I will be most interested in. Hopefully it will drive the point home…. no pun intended. Should be a good wake up call for the people of the country…

OK , I can help in a couple of ways

    1) Hosting , if needed
    2) Scripting / programming
    3) Sponsorship (small scale , but might help depending on what we need to do)

Where do we go from here?

    Hi Paul:
I’ve actually got it covered already, thanks:D
The domain I’ve gone with is roaddeaths.net so keep an eye on it, I’m going to try to get this going as quickly as possible.

I’m a developer so I don’t forsee any problems with the development of the site, I may just go with a blog format anyway.

The trick, I think, is going to be getting the stats that I need for this. I’ve emailed the NRA and Dept. of Transport (12 day turnaround on those feckers) so fingers crossed they’ll come through with something.

    If not..I’ll be ringing them:D

Did the Irish Times not publish this information a while back? (more than 12 months ago).

It’s the sort of info the paper would have – probably better to get *most* of the info and then fill in the gaps later.

    Paul:
I think for the moment I want to concentrate on 2006 and then when I have the time work back the way.
The NRA website has some good studies published for recent years here -> http://www.nra.ie/PublicationsResources/ListofPublications/RoadSafety/

You’re dead right about the papers though, I’ll see what I can get from them too. Thanks.

  9. […] I was talking to Ken when I arrived in work this morning about a post he had made on his blog. Basically it uses Google Maps to show any murders in NY over a given period. I thought It might be a good idea to do the same sort of thing only plotting road fatalities in Ireland.  After some discussion I went ahead and set up the domain, RoadDeaths.net, which is not yet live but will be as soon as GoDaddy get the finger out and set up the hosting. Things have started to snowball a little bit now as Kens post about this idea was picked up by TCAL and it seems there’s no turning back now. […]

  11. […] The manner in which the Clontarf murder was reported roused Richard Delevan, Rick O’Shea and others to speculate about exactly where the boundaries of gangland might be. Separately, Ken McGuire’s post earlier this year about the New York Times’ homicide Google Map prompted the development of RoadDeaths.ie, a site mapping Irish road deaths. These developments led me to have a go at creating a basic crime map for this city: dublincrime.com: Mapping crime in Dublin, Ireland. […]
