  • FoodCamp Hits Kilkenny This Friday

    A first for Kilkenny and quite possibly the country, FoodCamp (book your tickets) takes place this Friday at the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel as part of the Savour Kilkenny Food Festival. It’s an all day affair, kicking off at 10am and running through to 4:30pm. The venue works a treat for these kind of events, I’ve used it myself in the running of PodCamp locally a few years ago. But more importantly, it’s a chance to bring foodies and food producers together under the one roof for over 20 different talks and an afternoon panel discussion.

    Some of the topics up for discussion on Friday include

    • Health Tips for Foodies
    • The Place of Food Safety in Professional Small Food Businesses
    • Getting a Product to Market
    • Social Media, the Web and building your Food Business
    • Trends in packaging/ingredients/processing technologies in the seafood industry.

    The panel discussion, taking place after lunch is entitled Digging Ireland out of the recession – Artisan produce, Food Innovation and Guerrilla Marketing and features John McKenna (chair), Dr Susan Steel (BIM), Helen Finnegan (Knockdrinna Cheese), Una Fitzgibbon (Bord Bia), Margaret Jeffares (Good Food Ireland), Paul McCarthy (Teagasc) and Rozanne Stevens (Chef).

    I’ve the ticket booked but the lunch box yet to be packed. There is a lunch option available at the hotel which if you pick up a €15 ticket or go the recession-busting FREE day route IF you bring along a lunch enough for yourself with some more to share. I’ve a cracking red rice recipe I’m mad to try out so may well load up on that for lunch on Friday afternoon.

    For the past three years I’ve been involved heavily with the Rockfall Festival which runs the same weekend (October Bank Holiday annually), a role which I’ve stepped out of this year so I’m looking forward to getting tucked into some of the foodie treats on offer for the weekend.

  • BarCamp Belfast May 22nd

    REGISTRATION is open and underway for BarCamp Belfast, taking place at the University of Ulster on Saturday May 22nd. Already in the pipeline for talks are Freedom of Information … for coders and bloggers, Hyperlocal Belfast (would hyperlocal blogging work in Belfast), Location, Location, Location (looking at smarter phones and the mobile web in 2010), Making money out of fresh air (bootstrapping your startup), Project Management With a Client Focus (keeping your clients involved in the web development process).

    There’s a list of attendees there as long as your arm already and it won’t cost you anything to attend.

    After many promises to go north over the last few years, I made the trip to BarCamp Belfast last April (would be this weekend coming). If you can, it’s worth trying to make a weekend of it. As it was I’d made all the morning sessions before disappearing for lunch and finding myself caught up wandering around the streets of Belfast. Plenty to see and do, a ridiculous amount of places to eat and drink (or shop if you’re so inclined, including an Apple store).

    Last year’s ship was run very well, great talks, great people, great buzz about those in attendance and I still managed to run into a few familiar places. I’d booked myself into the Premier Inn last year, which is grand in terms of accommodation and food but the parking is a no-no and wifi costs (I think) £10 for a 24-hour pass, the most of which you’d be sleeping or out and about. Andy might have suggestions on somewhere close by that has parking and free wifi access (can’t for the life of me remember the name of the hotel you’d suggested!).

  • Now It’s The Turn Of BizCamp Belfast

    If you’ve not yet registered, you’ve still got time to put your name on the signup sheet for BizCamp Belfast, taking place this Saturday at The Black Box in Belfast.

    Having enjoyed BarCamp Belfast loads at the end of April, I know the setting, people and topics would make it another great day to attend. If you’re traveling from “the South”, it’s possible to hit Belfast from Kilkenny in around 3.5 hours when you’re constantly moving. The spin back from Belfast for me to Kilkenny was a breeze thanks in large part to roads around Carlow and Newry, in between it’s pretty much motorway all the way.

    If you’re driving up for the day, you’ve to pay for on street parking in a lot of areas or you can get multistorey parking about 2 minutes walk from the venue, though expect all day parking to be in the region of £20 or so. If you’re overnighting and don’t have car park access (as happened me when I stayed at the Premier Inn on Waring Street for BarCamp), parking is free on the streets after 6pm and all through Sunday.

  • Off To BarCamp Belfast

    I’m off to BarCamp Belfast this morning, been around Belfast since yesterday and liking it so far. My last trip here was 2-3 years ago but went nowhere near the city. Next time around I’ll book a hotel with parking (point to note for those thinking on booking the Premier Inn on Waring Street) – nice hotel, but lack of parking is a pain.

    Parking gripes aside BarCamp Belfast kicks off later this morning, registration underway in just under an hour, talks from 9:30pm to 5pm or so and it all takes place at the York Street campus for University of Ulster. Looking at the site this morning there’s over 370 people registered to attend 36 or so talks, panels and breakout sessions throughout the day.

    At least I remembered to bring a notebook with me. If you’re in the vicinity, drop in, if we’ve not met yet then say hello. No tricks to identifying me but I’ll be there all the same and I’m looking forward to it. Rumour is there’s drinks afterwards in McHugh’s or the John Hewitt bar but I’m sure all will be revealed later.

  • Tis The Season For BarCamps

    Tis the season for BarCamps, surely. Tomorrow I’m off to BizCamp in Dublin where I’ll join in the region of 200 other entrepreneurs, freelancers and free thinkers in the first business-focused BarCamp to be held here (nice to see another “themed” BarCamp running). Registration starts from 9am tomorrow and with the early train leaving Kilkenny pre-7am I’ll be hoping to make breakfast in Dublin. Talks are scheduled for between 10am and 5:30pm ish and there’s a draft schedule here.

    BizCamp Limerick follows on March 21st for those who can’t make Dublin tomorrow (it being “sold out”) or are looking for another helping of talks from more business people. The Limerick session is being held in UL and at time of writing there are currently 71 attendees and 19 speakers registered.

    Two events that I’m going to miss (will be out of the country) are the ACE (Awakening Creative Entrepreneurship) in Derry running March 25th – 27th and OSS BarCamp in Dublin on March 28th which runs in DIT’s Kevin Street Campus. While all the speaker slots have been filled, if you’re interested in going to OSS BarCamp, leave a comment on the attendees list.

    Finally, in April we’ve got BarCamp Belfast coming up. I haven’t been to Belfast since August 2006, catching Steel Pulse in the Andersontowns Leisure Centre (what a gig!) and it will be good to get across the border and meet some more web heads for the weekend. It’s going to be held in The Black Box on Saturday April 25th and already there’s over 110 signups, the makings of another great day.

    The best thing about all of these events is that they are free.

    If you’re looking to get out and meet some likeminded people – business types, designers, web heads, geeks, startups, entrepreneurs and more – then get yourself to one of these events because that’s where you’ll find them hanging out.

  • Creative Entrepreneurship UnConference for Derry

    ACE Awakening Creative EntrepreneurshipI like creative things. I like creative people. I like people who get up off their arse and start something, creative or otherwise. So it’s great to see word of the Awakening Creative Entrepreneurship UnConference hitting Derry at the end of March. With recent BarCamps, CreativeCamps and Unconventions hitting Belfast, it’s great to see another UnConference heading North, this one taking in the full weekend of March 25th to 27th.

    What is it?

    “Awakening Creative Entrepreneurship [ACE] is a collaborative unconference, a showcase, and a multi-track Creative BootCamp for creatives, business leaders, support agencies, students, developers, technology providers, and VCs looking to develop and/or discover the next big thing.     Booking & BizCamp

    Tickets are FREE so if you’re thinking on heading along, book now before it winds up like BizCamp – sold out. There’s no way I’ll make it to Derry on the weekend (giving a course in Kilkenny on the 26th before heading out of the country) but I will be at BizCamp for the most of the day on March 7th. Registration for that is closed but if you’re in Dublin for breakfast on the day, let me know. Rumour has there’s breakfast nibbles on offer.

    Registration, however, is open for BizCamp Limerick. If you’re around on March 21st, get booking for that too!

  • The Doors Are Open For BizCamp This March

    The doors (read registration) are now open for BizCamp taking place after FOWA in Dublin this March. With FOWA taking place on Friday March 6th, BizCamp will make for a great followup as it takes place in Dublin on Saturday March 7th.

    Feck the recession? That’s what they’re saying…

    It’s based on the fact that each of us as entrepreneurs have loads to learn from our peers. And we have a lot to share with them as well. There are a lot of great things happening in the Irish Economy – especially in small and medium businesses and this day will be a celebration of those. And a great place to come for people who have lost their jobs and are actively looking at starting up

    A nice addition to the signup form (which I think should be used for all BarCamp type events) is the ‘You can talk to me about…’ field, which maps over to the attendees list. If you’re going in the hope of meeting someone who can you can ask about content management systems, email marketing, gardening, the use of technology to help emergency services save more lives by making better decisions (Robin), now you’ll know in advance who you might be able to turn to or introduce yourself to.

    While it’s likely that I won’t make FOWA, I’m hoping to make the trip to Dublin for the 7th. Registration can be found here.

  • TeenCamp For Dublin Next Saturday

    TeenCamp, Ireland’s first barcamp-esque event for teenagers takes place next Saturday, January 17th, in Filmbase . You’ll find Filmbase on Curved Street in Temple Bar in Dublin.

    TeenCamp Ireland is a gathering of the techies/bloggers/fanboys age 13+ of Ireland to give talks, meet others, share ideas and have a laugh.

    TeenCamp’s are organised/planned/run by teens for other teens.

    They’re still registering for numbers so if you’re intending on going along on the 17th, let them know in advance so they can figure out how many pizzas to order up. Better still, if you’re in a position to help sponsor some pizza, projectors, drinks, hardware, software, goodies – anything at all – be sure and contact them and help get Teencamp off the ground.

    The day itself will run from 1pm to 7pm with a break for lunch around 3pm.

  • BarCamp Cork 2 – November 1st 2008

    The Corkonians are bringing BarCamp home, back to where it started in Ireland in 2006. Having attended and organised BarCamp / CreativeCamp / PodCamp events (three of which were in Kilkenny) in the last year or more I can safely tell you that these are the kind of events you should be going to.

    You’re not going to be asked for a registration fee. You don’t need to dress up for the occasion. You will meet some seriously nice, helpful, informative, clever, talented people. You can do it all from lurking in the background to throwing yourself into the thick of things and giving a talk or helping out as a volunteer on the day.

    Conor O’Neill looks like he’s at the helm for BarCamp Cork 2 which takes place at WebWorks on Saturday November 1st.

    Register (for free) to attend, you won’t be sorry.

    I finally cracked the drive to Dublin with the Irish Web Awards last week and was hoping November 1st would see me crack the drive to Cork as well but it looks like I might mixed up some course dates on the Kilkenny side of things. I’ll (at least) be following the activity in the run up to November first on Twitter where hopefully there’ll be plenty more coverage on the day.

  • CreativeCamp Belfast This Weekend

    The first CreativeCamp (in Ireland) hit Kilkenny this past March (I had a helping hand in organising the event), an event which started to bring in a nice concentration on design and the arts online. I had many a good conversation with film makers, visual artists, a writer, a theatre director – all of whom were starting to explore the online world as a means to promote their work and connect with fellow artists.

    While artists and creative practitioners made up a small portion of the blend of people there (there were initially 120+ subscribed to attend and likely 80-90 there over the day), the key thing is that it brought creative people together from all walks of life both online and off.

    So it was great to see Andy McMillan (who I got to meet at this year’s Irish Blog Awards, briefly) annouce earlier this year that CreativeCamp Belfast would be taking place. And wouldn’t you know, it’s taking place this weekend.

    CreativeCamp is a self-organised “unconference” – made up of open, participatory workshop-events where the participants are responsible for setting the agenda, deciding on topics and generating the content. CreativeCamp Belfast brings together technology and creative enthusiasts who want to make things happen with web, mobile, open source, new media, music and design.

    Of all the events and unconferences to provide some kind of online coverage or online archive of the day, this is one of those events I hope archives everything.

    When I passed my driving test earlier in the summer (before the need to have a second driver regardless of your license kicked in) I thought, “this is great – have van, will travel. Dublin, Belfast, anywhere with a bit of motorway”.

    Then in typical Irish form you get an invitation to a wedding and two fall on the same weekend, pinning me to Kilkenny on Friday and Mayo on Saturday. So there’s a slight part of me (the musician and music promotor / sponsor / butcher / baker / candlestick maker) gutted that I’m going to be missing out on talks like

    • Nick Fitzsimons – Music Licensing – What is it, how to approach it, and why it’s important
    • Rich Dale – A Manifesto for a sustainable NI Music Scene
    • Anto O’Kane – Building a new model of the music industry from the ground up – open discussion on the best way to keep a band afloat, and even make a few quid.

    not to mention the rest of the talks that are taking place on the day, a number of which have yet to have their details published.

    Plus it would have given me the chance to spread the wings and head to Belfast, take in a load of new faces on the day – the key thing for me behind these unconference events.

    So, long spiel aside, here’s the facts –

  • 53 And Counting… 3DCamp Is On The Way

    3DcampI’ve mentioned 3DCamp before but thought I’d put the idea back in your heads as the date is rapidly approaching.

    Next weekend (not this weekend) sees the inaugural 3DCamp take place at University of Limerick, the next in the line of themed BarCamp events running in Ireland. The attendees and speakers list continues to grow for what should be a very focused and very informative day covering virtual worlds, mirror worlds, mashups, haptics and all things 3D.

    If you’ve never been to a BarCamp type event and the world of 3D grabs your attention then ditch the inhibitions and mark May 24th into your diary.

    Twelve talks (so far) have been planned at present, some of which will see Sabrina Dent talking about making money in Second Life, Haydn Shaughnessy looking at ‘Culture, Content and the Next Web’, and organiser James Corbett talking about how he built the Clarion Hotel through Google SketchUp.

    For those of you planning on staying over in Limerick and enjoying some of the post-event activities, there’s also an accommodation list available on the site.

  • 3Dcamp Hits Limerick On May 24th

    3DcampJames Corbett and Gabriela Avram are some of the names behind 3Dcamp, the next in a line of great themed BarCamp events to hit the country, and it’s taking place in the University of Limerick on Saturday May 24th.

    The day will focus on

    • Virtual worlds (Second Life, the Metaverse)
    • Mirror worlds (Google Earth and Virtual Earth)
    • Mapping mashups
    • GPS
    • Location based Services (LBSs)
    • Haptics (eg. Wiimote hacks)
    • 3D modelling (Blender, Sketchup) and all things 3D.
    • …and more besides.

    Partly due to running around like a headless chicken on the day of CreativeCamp (well, not completely headless, but I think when you’re involved in the organising of an event there’s an element of ‘work mode’ on the day moreso than ‘pure enjoyment’ mode) I missed out on a number of talks that I know are going to crop up at 3Dcamp.

    So it pains me to say that while I can look forward to 3Dcamp happening and to the coverage of the day online, I won’t get within 50 miles of Limerick on the 24th of May due my summer gigging schedule (attending in Dublin on the 23rd, playing in Ballina, Mayo, on the 24th).

    The day runs from 10am to 6pm with talks and sessions taking place in the University’s Engineering Research Building. For the moment, you can visit the University of Limerick site for directions or head straight over to the 3Dcamp blog and register for free.

  • Getting Set For CreativeCamp

    We’re getting set for CreativeCamp in Kilkenny this coming Saturday. You know it’s on in a castle, right? We’ve also got in the region of 100 people registered for the day and we’d love to see everyone who has registered so far there! Secretly I’m hoping for a 50-a-side game of football or hurling in the park… is it possible?

    It is shaping up to be a great day. Myself and Keith will be in the venue tomorrow afternoon and Friday to check on a few last minute things before the doors to The Parade Tower swing open on Saturday morning.

    The latest treat for those in attendance comes in the form of organic and fairly traded wine coming to CreativeCamp via McGovern’s Organic Wines. You can enjoy a glass, hopefully in the sun, or perhaps watching a screening of the first episode of a new web-based sitcom being filmed in Kilkenny?

    There’s also talk of drinks afterwards as we know there’s a few people staying in Kilkenny. If you’re not booked into Kilkenny and need a few tips, I’ve added an accommodation list to the CreativeCamp blog with estimated walking times from The Parade Tower as well. With almost 20 talks on the day and some terrific sights to take in (do give yourself a chance to stroll around the castle grounds, feed the ducks, play on the swings) and a top class lineup of speakers across varying genres and backgrounds, the day is sure to present something for everyone.

    It’s well publicised at this stage that CreativeCamp will be taking place within the walls of Kilkenny Castle.

    If you haven’t ever seen The Parade Tower or had a stroll around the castle itself, I’ve uploaded some photos to flickr, snapped on a visit by myself and Keith to the castle yesterday.

  • CreativeCamp Continues To Grow

    CreativeCamp 08 - Kilkenny City, Saturday March 8th

    Of all the BarCamp-style events that will happen throughout 2008 along with the numerous meetups for web 2.0 types, bloggers, podcasters and more, I’m really looking forward to CreativeCamp.

    Nothing to do with being involved in the organising, or the fact that it’s based in a castle, but that people from all walks are keen to get involved. We’re getting terrific suggestions and offers via email for talks and panel discussions so there’ll be no lack of content on the day.

    As it stands, the CreativeCamp speakers lists shows a mix of 13 talks and panel discussions, knowing that there are more on the way. With 29 days, 23 hours and so many minutes left to (according to the widget on Keith’s blog) there are presently 53 people registered. In personal circles I’ve had a commitment from another 5-6 people, two of them I’m trying to involve in a discussion in online video production but the registration numbers continue to grow.

    Walter suggested yesterday that CreativeCamp might indeed be Ireland’s Web2.0 Woodstock.

    That said, we’ve got no intention of handing out mind-bending drugs, burning down the castle or inviting Creedence Clearwater Revival or The Who along but it should be a great event all the same.

  • Creative Camp Gets Colour

    Creative Camp has gotten a little colour, and a tagline to match.

    This is the logo we’ll be using for Creative Camp. I think ‘Business – Technology – Creativity’ encompasses the spirit of the day and of the event. On the creative side of things I’ll be speaking with ArtLinks in Kilkenny in the New Year about their involvement in the event.

    Offers to participate at an early stage are quite good with some nice ideas coming from the Waterford contingent in relation to design talks and workshops. We’re currently awaiting hosting and once it kicks in I’ll be tackling the blog end of things.

    The three strands of activities have been pretty much decided, as have the caterers, the venue (The Parade Tower at Kilkenny Castle) and of course the date – Saturday March 8th.

    As Creative Camp is operating in place of “Bar Camp Southeast” and is subject to portability (as in moving out of Kilkenny), it was decided not to localise the logo (like Galway ran with the claddagh and Dublin ran with the castle).

  • Creative Camp For Kilkenny (And It’s In A Castle)

    As Keith outlined earlier in the week, we’re set for Creative Camp in Kilkenny on Saturday March 8th. Formerly trading as Bar Camp South East, we’ve a bit of work to do yet in terms of the brand, URLs etc (I’m keen to try out the previously suggested barcamp subdomain idea and get the ball rolling there) but we’ve got a lock on March 8th with the venue set to be the ‘creatively inspiring’ Parade Tower at Kilkenny Castle.

    I’ve been going back and forth with Keith and Tom (Corcoran, WIT) over the last few weeks and we’re looking at locking down the theme for the day, interweaving the traditional BarCamp elements of technology and business with the creative flair so ripe in Kilkenny.

    Some good feedback came out of the inaugural PodCamp, held here in Kilkenny at the end of September which we hope to carry forward to Creative Camp. While three of us have been in discussion organising sponsors, caterers, the venue and theme, don’t hesitate to have your say or get involved in the day! Drop one of us a shout (knowing I’ve already had a great chat with Bernie and Keith has been speaking to others).

    I’m looking forward to the fact that it’s in the Parade Tower. I know the venue quite well (having been involved with another event held there only last week). The main room would sit 120 quite comfortably, has it’s own bar area, full sound booth, several in-house wireless microphones and one seriously large projector. Several breakout / boardrooms are also available, all in keeping with the original decor of the castle itself.

    The castle itself has also gone WiFi in recent months and we’re currently talking with the team there in relation to getting a WiFi network opened up for the day.

    If anything – you get to hang out in a castle for the day and experience Kilkenny at a good time of the year! Keep March 8th in your diary for Creative Camp in Kilkenny.

  • BarCamp Galway Today – Live Updates Availabile

    There’s live updates available from BarCamp Galway today with two options thus far available to you…

    • Keep an eye on the Jaiku channel as a back channel for discussion during the day, if you’re not in attendance it’s a great way to keep up with what’s going on either online or via SMS. If you are in attendance I’m sure you can use to to keep up with what’s happening at some of the other talks… I know I’ll have the mobile on for the day on this one.
    • Conn will be streaming some of the day’s events here on uStream.tv, again something I’ll be keeping an eye on. Perhaps a Jaiku alert when streaming is about to kick off?

    The Intruders cameras will be out and about as well so me might see some recaps and interviews from them in the coming week or two.

    As seen on the wiki, there’s a solid number due in attendance (around 80), the day of course being held in the DERI building at NUI Galway. Details on talk streams, speakers, directions, accommodation and all the jazz can be found on the wiki. Good luck to everyone on the day, sorry can’t be there but will be keeping tabs online throughout the day.

  • BarCamp Ireland Takes The Jaiku Approach

    After following a Jaiku from James Corbett it turns out that Aidan Finn has opened up a Jaiku channel for BarCamp Ireland. Given that we are using Jaiku as a back channel for PodCamp Ireland this September (and getting terrific use out of it), hopefully it will help BarCamp grow in the same way.

    If you don’t know already, BarCamp Galway is taking place on Saturday September 22nd.

  • BarCamps and PodCamps

    BarCamp Galway, if you haven’t heard, is now scheduled to take place on Saturday September 22nd and is being held in the DERI building at NUI Galway. Its quite possible that I’ll be in Sligo that weekend so making the drive down to Galway would be a bit easier than trekking over from Kilkenny anyway. I missed the BarCamp in Dublin and thoroughly enjoyed the talks at BarCamp Waterford back in January of this year.

    The Galway leg is being organised by John Breslin, Aidan Finn and Conor Hayes and currently has the guts of 40 names in attendance. I’ll have a look again closer to the date and see about throwing my name down for attendance.

    One thing I should be attending though is PodCamp Ireland with talk of an event being held the following weekend, September 29th. Keep an eye on that wiki as details of the event unfold.
