ESB Or The Weather – Sort It Out

Power down AGAIN this week, this time from 11am to about 3:10pm. While it gives plenty of time for ever important idea work it really does mess with your physical work. With this being the FOURTH outage since the weekend you can’t help but be annoyed.

Get a UPS? I got one and it saved me through many powercuts. I had my whole desktop, monitor, router, firewall, printer etc. all powered off it and it would last me at least 4 hours with the whole lot going (mind you – it warning beeped all the way through). APC Smart UPS 1000 was mine.

Arn’t you running off a MacBook battery anyway?

Sure am, but the UPS for the main server, router, firewall and the lot at the front of the building doesn’t last pissing distance and needs to be replaced. While the MacBook Pro lasts for hours (all the way through Bar Camp on Saturday, left on standby in my bag 6pm – 10am sunday, fully working sunday 10am – 2pm, and the first hour of work this morning) on the ‘better battery life’ option, we work a lot directly from one server here that wasn’t on the UPS. No net connection for online work, now electricity for the servers and I still have the core of my office work on the PC as opposed to the Mac.

Good tip on the UPS though, will seriously have to look into it – sooner rather than later seen as it was snowing this morning!

yeh worked a treat for me.

I’m 98% buying a MacBook this Spring… have you hit anything you don’t like yet, when you say most of your work is still on the PC?

well, when i say most of my work is on the PC i mean job related stuff (having left job files on it, plus particular software). The portability of the MBP makes my other work more possible – all kilkennymusic.com and Devious Theatre stuff on a daily basis. Such a vast array of open source applications available to make everything work well.

Pretty much allows a separation between the 9-6 and everything else.

Haven’t hit a thing I don’t like though. I’ve just last week picked up Photoshop, have some other software I’d use on a regular basis, but the mac alternatives are still trouble free. Used the MAMP install for apache, php, mysql to allow for the testing, problem free.

The Mac alternatives, software-wise, haven’t presented any problems and to be honest, I think I’m in love with the laptop…. You’ll do well to get yourself one!
